Note for:   Terence Alcée,   ABT 1847 - 4 SEP 1880         Index

Individual Note:   Before the Castries fire, a picture of Terence hung in Papa's (Othoniel) room at the home at St.Louis Street in Castries. Terence had a big moustache which was twisted at the ends, and had heavy,
distinctive eyebrows. Described as "a real French man".

The death certificate for Terence gives cause of death as epileptic fits. His occupation is a school master and he died at the age of 33, hence the estimate of birth year. His complexion is given as coloured.

Charles & Terentia are to be confirmed as parents of Terence, by the Archives, but as per notes from Lydia St.Cyr this should be accurate. The Archives supplied a birth certificate for a Jacques Willy (Folio 93, 27th June 1845, Soufriere Register) and indicated that this is the certificate for Terence as per references in other deeds (Jacques Willy aka Jacques Terence). Godparents for Jacques Willy are Jacques Mathurin and Desiree Bertine.

Individual Note:   Two Biddy's or Biddie's in Aberdeen, Nautical or railway Lady Grey house is a registry or tax records place. He had a farm in Aberdeen. His nephew was a nautical engineer and came to St.Lucia looking for
Virginia just after she w as married to Othneil to say that her father wanted her to come and live on the farm. She won't go to the wharf although she was all dressed up to go. It was too embarrassing t o be
seen on the wharf at that time. No first name, perhaps James???? Well built Scot's man.

Note for:   Marie Josephine Emily Lendor,   ABT 1865 - 11 FEB 1944         Index

Burial:
     Date:   UNKNOWN
     Place:   Riverside Cemetery, Castries, St.Lucia

Individual Note:   Emily Bonnett was known as Mam, she was very dark in complexion, like her father. According to Andreuille, when Mam was feeding Agnes one day a passing sailor remarked, "look at a white child suckling off a black woman".

She was married to Hubert Prince Albert Bonnett, and prior to their wedding a marriage contract (Vol 53a, 19915, 24th Sept 1894) was agreed. The contract states that Hubert is a carpenter from Barbados and Emily is a seamstress. The marriage was separate in property, so each was responsible for their own income, debts etc. At the time Hubert has a property in Barbados (half an acre with a house) on Dalkeith Road, Bridgetown worth £80. Emily has various furniture items worth £77. Witnesses for the future groom are Samuel Alleyne, carpenter and William Gibson, seaman of Castries. Witnesses for the future bride are Thomas Henry Busby, Bailiff and Francis Innocent Charles, cabinet maker, both of Soufriere.

Hubert died young, apparently by falling into the sea in a drunken state, in the process of throwing Emily's belongings into the sea. Emily then went on to have more children with a Scots man ( Captain Biddy), a Norwegian Captain, and English Captain. Captains and / or sailors? Rosalyn Martin and the Cadets are related to us on this side of the family, as well as the Riviere's of Soufriere (one is a lawyer). Sr Elizabeth (of the St.Joseph of Cluny nuns) was a Riviere and related to us. Andreuille was called to the convent to meet her around 1952/1953.

Mam was a ship's chandler, and became a wealthy and astute business woman. She had contracts with the ships for laundry when they were in port. She had about 20 laundresses to run the business. She worked together with Othoniel and Virginia to run the business bottling lime juice for the ships as well as pickled line in syrup and pure orange juice. Also during the war they would board the sailors or the French resistance. They also owned the International cafe which was renown for dancing, where sailors went to meet young girls. Also owned a pharmacy and a dry goods store. Mam eventually lost her money in efforts to support Henry, who was a gambler and alcholic. She owned land at Beaucage and Papa (Othoniel) bought it after it went to auction. Legend has it that Mam used to own a big black diamond that "disappeared". She had a great head for figures; you could call out a list of numbers and she could add them up instantly.

Mam's death certificate states that she died of colitis and cardiac failure, aged 79. Her occupation is given as homeduties.

Note for:   Agnes Bonnett,   20 APR 1902 - APR 1986         Index

Individual Note:   Found Aunt Aggie listed on the Ellis Island web site as arriving in New York on 30th September 1923, aged 19. Her physical description of height (5'5") eyes (grey) and hair (brown) were available. Her profession is a domestic. The ship was the Vestris, photo and details available. Aggie's port of departure was Bridgetown, St.Michael's, Barbados. She was to stay with her Uncle, Louis Gaillard at 369 Clifton Place, Brooklyn. Also cousin Mildred / Mildrie? at the same address. SSDI records then list her as being born on 20th April 1902 and dying in April 1986. Her social security number was issued in NY prior to 1951. Her actual death residence is listed as Puerto Rico, residence 00630, but it is unknown as to whether she actually died there.

She is describred by Andreuille as having coppertone complexion with Auburn / brown hair. According to Frank Alcée, she was married to a Puerto Rican, and two of her daughters married Italian men. He also said that Aggie's husband didn't send out the death announcement to her friends or family until 2 weeks after the burial, as they were embarrassed about too many black people coming to the funeral.

Note for:   George William Henry Bonnett,    - Deceased         Index

Individual Note:   Henry was trained as a Pharmacist. He apparently had no children, except possibly TonTon with Titine Thesee (Taunte Flavis and Dr StCyr family). Aunty Barbara recalls that Mam set up a pharmacy for Henry on the corner of St.Louis St and Pennier Street, but he never / seldom used it. He spent his time at the horse races and at the Vigie Club. Apparently he was the only coloured man allowed into the Vigie club. He wasn't very nice to his wife Augustine Thessee (Nen Titine) and she eventually went to live with his mother, Mam until she died. He also spent a lot of time going to Martinique. The story has it that once in Martinique he lit his cigar with rolled-up French money, and was arrested. Mam had to get him back to St.Lucia. Apparently when he did win at gambling, he would fill his hat with money and throw it to the crowds of people. He is described as a real philanderer. He died in a brothel at LaPansee called "The Star Club", where a friend of his cared for him in his old age. He is buried at the paupers end of Choc Cemetry, Castries.

had two sets of twins. It is said that the Morteau girls would be carried from Castries to Ravine Duval on sedan chairs carried by slaves. According to Emily Raye, late in life, Manon lived at 22 Grass Street, Castries, before Granny Alcée moved there following the loss of the house on Coral Street. Manon was very fair and had nice hair. In his will, her son, FH Alcée requested that on her death she be buried in vault 53 at Riverside Cemetry, Castries, and the expense be covered by his estate.
